At 10:30 am on the 22nd October, T-Mobile commenced the launch of the G1 Android, the event was a huge success amidst loud applause, as the crowd for reporters eagerly lapped up the features of the G1!
Larry Page and Sergey Brin even got to showcase their rollerblading skills as they “rolled in” the event at 11:09 am and then proceeded to answer questions! The Google G1 is offered at $199 and a 2 year contract and at $399 contract free. With over 1.5 million pre-orders, Google’s G1.0 Android Phone went on sale on the 22nd of October.
Google’s objective in launching the G1 is not win any cellular phone beauty contest, rather it seeks inspiration from two unlikely sources – Microsoft and FaceBook. G1 hopes to do what Microsoft has done with the Internet Explorer which is the default browser in a PC and hope to achieve an endless stream of add-on applications for G1, just the FaceBook‘s application feature.
The G1 is expected to launch in UK in November while other European nations will have to wait until the early 2009. Google is also looking forward to launch the G1 in developing markets such as India, “sometime by the second half of 2009″ according to HTC India’s head Ajay Sharma.
Coming to the functionality, the Google recently launched Chrome Browser will also work in the G1 and has been aptly named as Chrome Lite for the mobile device! AAC, MP3 and DRM free iTunes files are supported but as of now there is no support for Skype,
So who designed the chip that powers Google’s G1 Android?
The chip designed by Qualcomm in association with the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), it offers a dual core solution with fast processing, 3D graphics, advance multimedia and a multimode, built-in 3G connectivity for the best internet browsing experience, thereby achieving a breakthrough in Linux based mobile platforms.
