Which G1 Update Did You Get? RC28 Or RC29?

Image from engadget.com

As you read in our previous post about the G1updates going out over the air for the next few weeks, you were probably anxiously expecting to get it and see version RC28 after you rebooted your unit. But guess what? Some people not only received the update already, but they skipped directly over RC28 and actually saw RC29 when they rebooted their phone!

RC29, WHAT?

Yeah, a lot of people over at the offical T-Mobile G1 phone forums are going absolutely crazy (for no good reason, as they were told that the “rolling” updates would take a while to distribute) that some people are actually getting a brand new update before they even get what’s now considered “the old one”.

Why RC29?

Well, apparently there were some security issues, more specifically the rumors state that in the RC 28 update that the browser may be susceptible to keylogger viri (trojans, etc…whatever), and T-Mobile (must have) decided to switch over RC28 to RC29 effective immediately. So if you already received RC28 and thought everything was cool – it’s time to panic! No, not really.

Just wait patiently for another update, as I’m sure they’ll want to patch up all those RC28ers as soon as possible to prevent any bad publicity. They could probably do the damage control now before anyone even knows what’s actually going on. Good job, T-Mobile!

Of course, we’ll keep you updated with any late changing or breaking information on this.

No worries man – you’ll receive the new RC29 update then. Might be a few more days though :) Hang in there!

  • Anthony Marmolejo said:

Yea but I got it when it first came out on the 22nd and now a week and two days later still nothing.

    BTW cool pic Ryan

Ok today is Oct. 31st which means HAPPY HALLOWEEN and that I still haven’t got the OTA update and I had this phone since the 22nd. Its been 9 days now people out there got theirs next to 3 days laters and I have been waiting. Then I am told to wait a little more wtf why? Everyone got theirs. See that’s jus HTC, T-Mobile, and google f***ing up with this phone first the memory problem which is major sh*t serious why show the phone with so much potential and make the Android Market and its apps the coolest thing cuz of its OS and give so freaking little memory to download apps with that’s just bull serious. Cuz I bought my micro sd hoping to do stuff with it like DOWNLOAD apps on it and I can’t even do that. And then the OTA update which I have been waiting for 9 f**king days for and on top of that I am told to hold on a little more wtf for I waited long enough I still have the f**king RC19 how the f**k am I suppose to feel when I have this picture of the perfect phone and the iphone killer something that is f**king better than the over rated iphone which to me is dumb see I was expecting something better than the stupid iphone but man this phone is having problem living up to its name and reputation. And man all I’m going to blame is google and HTC for doing this so far I’m disappointed that its really happening like this having so much problem so early one the dumb f**king iphone didn’t even have this much problem to begin with.

See I would love it if it was like a PSP and when we need a update that we can search for the update straight from the psp just by selecting the update option easier and better way to get a freaking update and on top of that a stupid game system has that and a state of the art phone can’t even do that. And psp everything you download goes straight to the memory card whatever it is weither if it was a video or a file still to the memory.

And don’t get me wrong I love my G1 with everything believe me its just there is sooo much potential for this phone and its way better than the iphone it just gets me mad that its better than the stupid iphone but its getting too many probs see I know its going to be better but not right now it like ordering the best weapon better than a nuclear bomb and you get it and them tell you there’s problems with it like its not the best yet and that you can’t use it yet cuz they need to do stuff to it like add parts or a special hardware before you can do anything with it. You would be like wtf noooo its supposed to be the best why are you doing this to me. F**k you f**k you all go to hell.

So please understand where I’m coming from and why I’m furious about this situation.

Does anyone know, if an unlocked phone with another carrier is updated ota as well?

I just ordered one from ebay and ask myself if I have a problem. By the way: The link to download the update manually is not working anymore. New link?

This update thing is crap. I have had my G1 since 10/28/08. I have never received an update, and I still have RC19. Also, sometimes my phone doesn’t “wake-up” when I hit the menu button. The power button does nothing either. So I have to remove the battery, replace it….THEN power it back on before it starts up again. The dealer gave me a new battery, but it just did it again…he says wait for an update, but I seem never to get one. How can I get the RC29 update….seems to me it would be easier to just have an “update” setting on the phone…I know my iPod does :P

Please advise me to what I should do to get my phone in order, since the dealer has little to offer.

    Thanks,

    Brent H

I was the same way waiting the update is random i only had my phone for 2 weeks and i got an update on my G3 connection i think u have to be on your G3 connection to get it. I think not sure. But i know the RC29 makes faster and fixes some of the freezeing and downloading mp3 from amozon. My G1 was not really giving my problems at all i just dont like the camera.

  • tahrik said:

How can I tell if I have the update? My G1 have worked just fine and I had the phone for about 2 weeks now. I love it. Works fine for me in the miami, fl area. Wish some of the apps come with instructions. I guess when its free you can’t really complain…but what’s apps if you don’t understand how to use it.

  • Brent said:

Still waiting on ANY update….I live in Chicago, and 3G is fine here, so I should have gotten something by now….and now I hear there is a RC30 update..I STILL have RC19…this is bogus. I have had the phone for almost 3 weeks now….with nothing. This phone is getting returned tomorrow for sure…will prolly exchange it, but thinking about straight up returning it…I’m not gonna pay for this phone, when it craps out all the time….nt worth the $$$$

  • Ryan said:

I just did the manual update to RC29 (and it was quite easy), and within 30 minutes it prompted me to download the RC30 update!

I downloaded it, rebooted, and everything works as planned. No problems with the update whatsoever.

For those that are still waiting for the update…you may want to seriously consider the manual one. It’s your choice, but for me, it saved quite a headache!

    thx
    nat

  • TheHague said:

    Hi Nat!
I just spoke with TM G1 support about updates and where to find what version we are currently running.

The >arrow means go to: >Settings>About phone>build number>mine says kila-user 1.0 TC4-RC30 That means I have RC30 update! There is a firmware update but it will be coming with the RC33 update within the next week (by Feb 15!)

Just turn your phone off at least one time per day for at least five seconds and turn it on. The update will happen automatically when it is available to you!

    I hope this helps!

  • Jonny said:

I recently got the g1 and i was talking to one of my co-workers that has the same phone, he showed me a few things that mine did not have? like longitude and this option where he can just say the name of whatever in for example: “escort in seattle” it said that and his g1 listed seattle escort services. he said that he had gotten an update. One that he said i should get soon. ive had it a couple days and still nothing….. can anyone help?

  • Jessica said:

    Hi Johnny!
What you can do is go to settings and then click on about phone and then on the top it should say “system updates” click on that and it should be there if you didn’t get it atomactically. If not turn off your phone and try again :D

    Hope this helppped! :D

  • Tangie said:

    Hello all,

My phone says: “CRB43″, is that the latest version or just what available here in Chicago?

  • Jessica said:

If you’re still confused on what update you have or how to manually get an update on your phone, try this. The > means go to: to check what version you have >settings>about phone>build number- the number at the end is the version that you have. The most recent update is CRB43. To manually get an update >settings>about phone>system updates. This will update you to the newest version or let you know that you already are up to date. Hope this helps!!

  • brandon said:

well, i am not sure which one i have, all i know is after the update, a box with the force close option keeps popping up saying that open home (an app that allows you to customize your “desktop” a whole hell of a lot better than default home, and allows you to have more features for your desktop) cannot be opened, therefore leaving me with a black screen and an error message that pops up 3 seconds after i touch force close…. if anyone can help, just leave a comment on here
