RC30 G1 Update To Patch Jailbreak Back Door
7.11.08 # 19:03 # G1 Updates # 14 CommentsSo it turns out that everyone was desperately waiting for the RC28 updates (to patch up from RC19, which is what came with most phones), and then we heard about a potential problem so RC29 was released. Great. Now guess what?
You get to wait again for RC30!
Apparently a leet haxor was able to find an exploit in the current software version that allowed them access to the root level of the Android operating system. Although Android is open source, I don’t thing Google enjoyed the fact that people were now able to go through a “back door” (yeah, I hate saying that phrase) to access the lower levels of the virutal Android basement.
In any case, the new RC30 updates will probably be pushed out pretty fast, due to the sensitive nature of the security flaw. This is good news and bad news…as those waiting for the last update and finally got it will now have to wait for another, but, those that haven’t received the update yet will at least hopefully get it a bit faster now. We’ll see.
A statement from Google:
“We’ve been notified of this issue (Jailbreaking of Android) and have developed a fix. We’re currently working with our partners to push the fix out and updating the open source code base to reflect these changes.”
Although I’m not too frustrated by the upcoming update, I wonder how many people out there are starting to question the phone’s logevity with all of these security flaws and updates? Just remember, we WERE told from the beginning to wait, but one can only wait so long…
We’d love to hear from anyone that received the RC30 update or any other update experiences you’ve had. Just post in the comments below. Thanks!

Just got the G1 RC30 update….
Being the only thing of major concern to me, I tested the AIM client immediately.
Nope. Still not fixed. Messages still appear to come from myself. Guess it’s back to using meebo. You’d think if they can push out patches they can at least fix something, ya know?
I just got the RC30 update minutes ago. I am very hopeful that it fixes the issues of random dropping of my internet connection over 3G and Edge after idle time.
Got it 90 minutes ago. I don’t notice a difference at all… but that is alweays a good thing. I don’t have issues with AIM messages doubling back… so that’s a glitch on your phone. Otherwise great!
I just updated about 45 mins ago… I noticed that my 3g was having connection issues but once I restarted the phone again, it seemed to be faster than b4…. I’m not sure ill be mad over the fact that now I just killed my opportunity ar free apps…we’ll see
I just got my update rc30 2hours ago not much of a difference for me 3g is the same goes in and out and changes into the edge network. Aim is still messed up I’m starting to think they don’t want to fix it hoping everyone just uses gtalk =/ none the less I guess I gotta give it sum time or restart my phone maybe I’ll see the difference others said .
I just have one question (for the moment)… How does one find/get the updates? My phone came last week with RC19… I’m reading here that people are already equipped with the latest (30)…
Got the update today, I have had a number of issues with connectivity and having to reboot to get back on the network. I hope this fixes this.
Please excuse my ignorance, but I just got the new g1 phone. How do I update the new software patches?
Thanks for the advise!
Today morning (Nov 10) 8 am I had my g1 SW upgrded from RC29 to RC 30, it was upgraded remotely by TMO, all I had to do is press ok and rest was all automatic.
Yeah, eventually EVERYone will receive the update OTA (over the air, but there are still pretty large numbers of people who are waiting to get past RC19. They resorted to manually updating their phones…which so far has worked well.
As a matter of fact, people that are manually updating the phone (although it isn’t supported by T-Mobile) to RC29, are being prompted just minutes later for the RC30 update. Some thought it was a coincidence at first…but when dozens of people reported the same thing, it seems that somehow manually updating to RC29 forces the RC30 update. Strange, right?
Anyway, I’m going to be updating a G1 today and will report on what happens.
Thanks for all the input everyone!
sorry im completely new at this, but how the heck do i check what update i am at?
nevermind i found it. i still have problems with connections… got the same problem with aim too. just started using gtalk. lol
my phone came with rc30 when i purchased it, and i must say i have none of the problems you guys mention maybe its your specific phone that just has an issue did you try contacting customer service? plus i disabled my 3g and set it to 2g and my internet actually runs faster than my wifes g1 (who uses 3g) so give that a try.
