Your Experiences With The RC30 Update

I know, I know….many of you will probably have nasty things to say about the OTA update process that has taken place so far. Many of you are still on RC19, or maybe even RC28, patiently awaiting the RC30 update. I admit, Google definitely needs to ramp up their updating efforts. I know they say that updating everyone at once wouldn’t be possible, but with the tremendous amount of people that are still awaiting even their first update, you think they would have came up with something by now.

Some of you (including me) did the manual update. It’s really not that hard, and when it’s done, almost everyone who does it is reporting that the phone, within minutes, will tell you that RC30 is ready to be downloaded. I did the manual update from RC19 (which is what most people have on their phone when they take it out of the box) and within about 5 minutes of manuall updating to RC29, I got a message telling me that RC30 was ready. So it seems that as soon as you have RC29, the phone “checks in” with the database, and promptly encourages you to install RC30 (which apparently fixes a security loophole of some sort).

So the question is – why doesn’t Google/T-Mobile set up something on their website(s) that would officially support manual updates of the phone? Doesn’t Iphone do that through itunes? I don’t see how hard it could possibly be, give the resources of both companies. Plus, it would quiet down about 95% of users who are rightfully past being patient in waiting for their updates.

On the other hand, officials over at the T-Mobile forums have said from the beginning that we need to be patient in waiting for the OTA updates for the G1 phone. I have to give them and Google credit, because I’m sure they’re doing their best in updating the phones in a safe and effective manner, but perhaps they overlooked the sheer amount of G1 users that they were actually going to have. Who knows.

As for the title of this post, I ask the question about what your experience is with the latest update, because I’ve literally heard everything from “It’s GREAT!” to “It bricked my phone!”, and everything in between. I must say that I’m one of those users that have had nothing but good experiences with the RC30 update, and it even seems that my battery lasts longer. Call it a coincidence if you want, but my G1 runs smoother than ever before.

Let me know what you think, what your experiences are with updates, and what you think of the updating progress so far. We’ll discuss in the comments below. Thanks!

rc30 has been pretty good to me, i’m currently using my iPhone; but that only because i installed my invisible shield last night, and I am letting the screen cure properly for 12 hours lol. phone does run a bit smoother but i have decided to remove apps that i do not use to free up some internal memory..

I’m only on rc8 in the UK too, god that sucks! Any ideas when we’re getting all these updates?

Think that I may buy a 3rd party battery soon too!

I have the RC30 update… not exactly sure when it was installed but I’ve noticed that a couple of calls were made inadvertently (user error?) and I also had some trouble hanging up a call. Outside of that, I havent noticed any issues. Battery life has been pretty good.

…. i cant wait til the next update… i feel like this one is a lil sluggish.. or actually that overall my phone is kinda like that vs my iphone.

I did a manual upgrade to RC30 by downloading the package from Google, renaming it to update.zip, dropping it on the SD card, and then rebooting the phone into maintenance mode. However, the “myFaves” application seems to have disappeared as a result. I still have the icon on the phone’s wallpaper, but it complains with “This application is not installed on your phone” when I tap on it.

Supposedly, the fix is to go back into maintenance and wipe the phone, but I’m out in a non-tmobile area right now, and I don’t want to risk not being able to register with Google again.

    Anyone else run into this?

Well, I’m happy to hear that people have been having great experiences with the G1, too bad it is not my case also. Before the update to RC30, battery life was fine and phone, minus a few glitches (can’t make calls etc) and slowness, was also fine. Since the update, things have been worse. I still can’t make calls on occasions, like this one time I couldn’t make a phone call for half hour (while in plain air with NO signal), even when I turned the phone back on and had to call Tmobile from my friend’s phone and they reccomended a master reset-for me to do that everytime i can’t make a call for an amount of time. My battery life went awol and died by the time 11AM strolls in, and my phone dies whenever it wants to: in the middle of a call, a text message, u name it, it just dies and restarts itself. I am sticking it up however bcuz I wasted a lot of money into phones from tmobile with the SAME results noticeable by everyone around me. This is my 12th phone since I joined almost 2 yrs ago, the majority of which I had to exchange, so I am not wasting another penny with tmobile in regards to phones. To clarify, tho this comment has an “upset” air to it, I am neither upset nor mad while writing this cuz it is what it is and I can’t change that.

    Thanks

  • Mario said:

I was just automatically updated to RC33 this afternoon. So far, the only upgrade/update I’ve seen is on the Google search toolbar whereas it added voice search feature. It’s pretty cool. Just make sure you speak clearly and not too fast.

  • Andrea said:

  • Gavin said:

Yay my first update i just got the TMI-RC9 update in uk but to be honest i am not sure what it has even done is there a list anywhere that lists changes in updates?

  • jake said:

ever since the newest update my g1 has been horrible it drops calls back to back everytime i use it is there a way to fix it downgrade?

  • scuzz said:

I just received the TMI-RC9 update the same as Gavin (I’m in the UK), and I am completely confused about whether I am up to date with everyone else, I cant find a list anywhere of new features or patches added. The only thing I’ve noticed is that in the “About Phone” there is a new option to check system updates, and when I do that it tells me I’m up to date.

  • Gavin said:

Yes scuzz that is the only change i noticed

  • Davey said:

RC9 here also in UK. got an update the first morning after initial charge, no idea what it was before.

As there’s a huge gap between our RC8/9s and what I assume to be the US RC28-33s how sure can we be that the US RC8/9s are what we have now?

  • mies said:

    Rc9 = rc33
